Some creators like to issue certificates to students who complete their courses.

While Podia doesn't have a built-in certificate feature at this time, we still make it easy to generate certificates for your students.

To get started, you'll need a few things:

Here's how to set up certificates:

1. Create a survey with all of the information you need to collect for your certificate

For example, the student's name and email. 

2. Send survey responses to a spreadsheet


Click on "Responses" at the top of your form, and select "Create spreadsheet".

3. Submit a test form

In order to complete the final steps in this process, you'll need some test data in your form.

Click on "Send form" at the top right, and go to the form link.

4. Create your certificate as a Google Slides file

Use Google Slides to create a certificate that looks the way you want it to. You can start with our (free) template; just click File > Make a copy to customize it with your own logo and course name.

For any text that you'd like to customize for each certificate, use double braces {{like this}} to surround the text.

Click on "Share" at the top right, and be sure that anyone with a link can view this certificate:

5. Use Zapier to connect your survey to your certificate template

Next, create a Zap to automatically generate a certificate whenever the survey is filled out.

For the trigger, select "New response in spreadsheet in Google Forms", and choose the spreadsheet you just created for your Google Form responses:

Next, choose Google Slides as your "Action" application, and choose "Create presentation from template" as the action.

Give the certificate a title. You can customize the title with the student's name.

Choose the presentation file you created in step 4 and make sure that "Is shared?" is set to "yes".

Zapier will automatically pull any merge fields you created with braces, and let you replace that text with the student's name from their form response:

6. Test your Zap

We're almost done!

Next, click "Test and continue". Zapier should create a new Google Slides document in your Google account, using the test data.

Go to your Google Slides (direct link) to make sure everything looks the way you want it to:

Note: The Zapier Free account allows Zaps with up to two steps. So for free account users, at this point, you'll need to download the certificate from your Google Slides and email it to your student, OR setup the Zap below as a separate two-step Zap.

For users on Zapier's paid plans, proceed with step 7 below.

7. Set up an automatic email

Go back to your Zap, and click the plus sign to add one last step:

Choose "Gmail" as the app, and select "Send email" as the action.

(This assumes that use a Gmail account, which you probably do if you're using Google Docs. However, Zapier connects with dozens of email providers, and even has their own "Email by Zapier" function if you'd prefer to use something else.)

Next, choose who you want your email to go to.

If you want to manually approve/review all certificates and then send them yourself, type your own email into this box.

If you want the certificate to automatically be emailed to the student, choose their email from the drop-down.

You can add multiple email addresses here, so you can send it to both of you if you'd like.

Now you can customize the email any way you'd like. For example, adding a custom message of congratulations, a link to another one of your products, or a request for feedback.

In the "Attachments" field, be sure to select "Export Links Application/PDF". This will ensure that your certificate is emailed as a PDF.

When you're finished, turn your Zap on, and you're done! 🙌

8. Add your survey to your Podia course

You can add a link to your Google Form as a text section at the end of your course, and your students will be able to apply for their certificate after they've completed all of the modules.
