SEO basics & best practices
SEO, which means Search Engine Optimization, is all about making your website friendly for search engines.
It's a series of actions you take to show search engines what your content is about, which can help your website show up higher on search results pages.
In this article, we'll share strategies you can take to improve your on-page SEO.
A key factor in achieving effective SEO is producing high-quality content. Generally, search engines favor content that is not only relevant to the search query but also comprehensive and regularly updated.
Although we don't offer a sitemap.xml file for Podia sites, we've designed your site to be easily navigable and indexable by search engines.
This setup, along with other SEO factors like keyword targeting and domain authority, means you don't need to take additional steps to ensure your site is found by search engines.
Keyword targeting
When it comes to keyword targeting, the first step is to determine what it is you are optimizing for.
You should identify and decide which keywords you want to focus on and adjust the pages of your Podia site accordingly.
After you decide which keywords to target, you can follow some basic SEO guidelines to ensure they're appearing on key areas of your site:
Keywords should appear in prominent positions, such as your text, headings, and page/product titles
Avoid keyword stuffing (repeating the same keyword several times without context)
Include the keyword on your page URL
Optimize Title Tags & Meta Descriptions to include the keyword you're trying to target
Heading sizes
Headings are important for both people visiting your website and for search engines.
Visitors look at headings to quickly see if the page has what they need. Big headings usually show the main ideas, helping visitors find their way around the content.
Search engines use headings to understand what the page is about. This helps place the page in search results where it fits best.
On Podia, you'll be able to adjust your headings based on 4 sizes: Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3, and Heading 4.
Headings get smaller as you go down. The H1 heading
is the biggest on the page. H2
is a bit smaller than H1
, and H3
is smaller than H2
, and so on.
Start with the H1 heading
, which is the biggest and shows the main idea of the page. It should be able to translate the main idea of your page. If you are targeting specific keywords, make sure to include it in your H1 heading
.
Best practices say you should only have one H1 heading
per page.
Subheadings from H2
to H4
help break down and further organize your content into clear sections.
Most pages should have at least one H2 heading
to outline major points. However, if having an H2 doesn’t make sense for your readers, it’s okay to skip it.
Use subheadings H2
to H4
where they naturally fit in your content, to guide readers through the text and clarify the structure.
Be careful to use these headings in order, avoiding any jumps in the heading levels to maintain a smooth flow and logical order.
Now that we have a better understanding of how to use headings, let's take a look at how to adjust heading sizes on Podia.
Title tags & Meta descriptions
Title tags & Meta descriptions are shown each time a page appears in search engine results.
It helps search engines understand the content of a page and it is one of the factors search engines take when ranking different pages.

How long does SEO take to work?
How long does SEO take to work?
There's no way to predict how long a site would take to rank in search engines or assume a specific position.
Usually, you can expect to see results in 4-12 months, but this can vary based on the keywords you are targeting, how competitive they are, how optimized your site and pages are, and how many internal/external links you have on your page.
Regardless of how long a site has been live or active on any platform does not indicate how high it will appear in search results, how much organic traffic it will receive, or anything of that nature.
SEO requires tweaking and adjusting to see these types of results over time. SEO is a science and many of the top results have a team of SEO experts constantly tweaking and working on their sites.
Can you guarantee my site will rank on Google?
Can you guarantee my site will rank on Google?
No one has control over when Google indexes a page or updates its index.
If you have a custom domain connected to your Podia account you can add it to Google Search Console and request Google to crawl/re-index your site.
This should help speed up the process and get your site ranking in Google faster.
