Podia treats customers and subscribers as two different groups, which is why some of your customers may not appear as subscribers.
In this article, you’ll learn the difference between customers and subscribers, and why they aren’t always the same.
Customers vs. Subscribers
What is a customer?
A customer on Podia is someone who has created an account on your Podia site. In most cases, customers are people who’ve purchased something from you.
Customers may or may not be subscribed to receive emails from your site.
Customers can be considered subscribers as well IF:
You have the automatic subscription turned on for your product purchases.
They have chosen to subscribe to receive your marketing emails via opt-in subscription during checkout
What is a subscriber?
A subscriber is a person who:
Has provided consent to receive your marketing emails; OR
Signed up directly via an email form on your site or product waitlists.
Why are some of my customers not subscribers?
If you have opt-in subscriptions enabled in your Checkout subscription settings, customers won’t be automatically subscribed to marketing emails.
Instead, they’ll be asked to check a box that says “I accept to receive marketing emails from [Site Name].” They’ll only become subscribers if they select this option during checkout.
If a customer doesn’t check this box, they won’t become a subscriber and won’t receive marketing emails from you.
You can check a contact's subscription status directly from your Contacts page.
Is this checkbox necessary?
No. You can safely switch between automatic and manual checkout subscription options, depending on your needs.
The option to use a manual opt-in with a checkbox is available to help you comply with the CAN-SPAM Act and current GDPR regulations.
The CAN-SPAM Act (Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography And Marketing Act of 2003) is a consumer protection law that establishes requirements for commercial messages and gives recipients the right to unsubscribe or opt out of commercial and marketing emails.
It also requires that unsolicited commercial emails be identified as advertising and provide recipients with a method for opting out of receiving any such email in the future.
GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) is the toughest privacy and security law in the world. Though it was drafted and passed by the European Union (EU), it imposes obligations onto organizations anywhere, so long as they target or collect data related to people in the EU.
Can customers resubscribe to emails?
Yes. Customers can always resubscribe to emails directly from their customer dashboard.
