Learn more about Podia's shopping cart features

Written by Rodrigo

Podia’s shopping cart lets your customers browse your site, add products to their cart, and purchase multiple items in one checkout session.

Customers can use their cart on your site or in the Shop area of their account.

In this article, you’ll learn how the shopping cart works and what your customers will see.

Overview

Customers have two main options when purchasing a product.

They can purchase a product directly and individually by clicking Buy now, or add multiple products to their cart and purchase them together.

Here’s how each option works:

  • Add to cart: Adds the product to the customer’s cart and opens the cart. They can review their items or keep shopping.

  • Buy now: Adds the product to the customer’s cart and takes them directly to checkout. Any other products already in their cart will also be included.

If the customer adds multiple products, they’ll see a summary of everything they’re purchasing at checkout.

Adding items to cart

Customers have different ways to add an item to their cart:

Site

Visitors and customers can click Add to cart wherever you feature products on your site pages.

  • The Add to cart button is available for products displayed through the Products and Banner page sections.

After adding a product, they’ll be taken to the /checkout/cart page. From there, they can review their cart and proceed to checkout or select Keep shopping to return to your site and add more products.

Shop

Logged-in members can add products to their cart while browsing your Shop.

The Add to cart option is available on each individual Shop product page.

Removing items from cart

Customers can remove a product from their cart in two ways:

  • From the cart/checkout, click the trash icon next to the product.

  • When a product is already in the cart, its Add to cart button changes to In your cart. Hovering over the button changes the label to Remove from cart. Clicking it removes the product and changes the button back to Add to cart.

The item count shown next to Cart in your site’s header will update automatically. In Shop, customers will also see a Removed from your cart confirmation.

Managing cart items

Customers can review and manage the products in their cart by opening it from your site.

How they access their cart depends on whether they’re logged in to their account.

People visiting your site

Site visitors can access their Cart from your site’s header.

As products are added, the label updates to show the number of items in the cart, such as Cart (3). Clicking Cart takes them to the cart page, where they can review or remove products and proceed to payment.

Logged-in members

Logged-in members can open their cart from the header while viewing Shop, Wishlist, or an individual Shop product page.

On mobile devices, customers will see a cart icon in the upper-right corner of the Shop, Wishlist, and individual Shop product pages.

Clicking Cart opens a panel where they can review their cart without leaving their account. From there, they can remove products, keep shopping or proceed to payment.

FAQs

Is a customer’s cart saved?

Yes. Logged-in customers keep the same cart across your public site and Shop. Their cart is also saved between visits, so they can return later and pick up where they left off.

Carts will not be saved for people who are not logged in.

Does Buy now include products already in the cart?

Yes. If a person clicks on Buy now, it adds the selected product to the customer’s cart and takes them directly to checkout. They won't be able to add more products if they click Buy now.

Any items already in their cart will also appear at checkout.

Can customers purchase multiple copies of the same item?

No. Customers can only add one of each item to their cart.

Can customers add events or plans to their cart?

Events and plans don’t have an Add to cart button.

Registering for an event or choosing a plan adds it to the cart and takes the customer directly to checkout. Other items already in their cart will be included, too.

If the customer leaves before completing checkout, the event or plan will still appear when they open their cart.

Can customers add more than one plan?

No. Customers can only choose one plan.

If a customer already has a plan in their cart and chooses a different one, the new plan replaces the previous plan.

What happens if an item becomes unavailable?

Items aren’t automatically removed from the cart when their availability changes.

If an item becomes unavailable after a customer adds it, they’ll see an error at checkout.

Will customers see purchase buttons for products they already have access to?

In Shop, customers won’t see Buy now or Add to cart buttons for products they already have access to.

Can I customize the Add to cart button label?

No. The Add to cart label can’t be customized.

Can the cart feature be disabled?

No. The cart feature can’t be disabled. It gives customers an additional way to purchase multiple products from you in a single transaction.

Customers can still click Buy now on your site pages or in your Shop when they want to go directly to checkout for a product.

How do upsells work with multiple items?

The upsells page can include offers associated with multiple items in the customer’s cart.

If the same product is offered as an upsell more than once, it will only appear once, using the first applicable upsell discount.

Are activity updates and email notifications combined when customers purchase more than one item?

No. Recent activity entries and email notifications are handled separately for each item. They aren’t combined into a single cart activity or notification.

Can I manually add an Add to cart button to my pages?

Yes. You can manually add an Add to cart button to a page by linking it to the product’s add-to-cart URL.

To create the URL, add /add-to-cart to the end of the product’s sales page URL.

For example:

  • Product sales page: yoursite.com/product

  • Add-to-cart URL: yoursite.com/product/add-to-cart
