Testing your knowledge right after learning something new has been shown to improve long-term retention. This is especially helpful if you want your customers to get lasting value from your courses.

Quizzes make this easy by letting customers check their understanding throughout your course, while also giving you a way to review their results and see how they’re doing.

In this article, we’ll walk through how to set up quizzes for your online courses.

Overview

Quizzes are available for online courses and help you assess and track how well customers understand your content.

You can add as many quizzes as you need and place them throughout your course. For example, you might add a quiz at the end of each section to check customers’ progress before they continue.

Member experience

When members reach a quiz in your online course, they can open it and complete all the questions you’ve prepared for them.

Quizzes use multiple-choice questions. Members select the answer or answers they believe are correct, then submit their response to see whether they answered the question correctly.

When they're done answering all of the questions, they'll see their final results before moving on to the next lesson, as well as the option to retake the quiz.

To view your customers' quiz completion individually, you can do so by checking their course progress.

Correct answers

Quizzes use multiple-choice questions, and you can choose how many right answers a specific question has:

One right answer: Customers can only pick one answer.
One or more right answers: Customers can select multiple answers. They must select every correct answer to answer the question correctly.

Passing scores

You can also set a passing score for each quiz. If a customer doesn’t reach the passing score, the quiz won’t be marked as complete.

If a later section is set to unlock based on course progress, that section will remain locked until the customer passes the required quiz.

After someone submits their answers, they’ll see whether they passed or failed, along with their score and results. If they don’t reach the passing score, they can retake the quiz and try again.

Creating a new quiz

Here's how to create a new quiz on Podia:

From your home feed, click on your site name and select Admin from the dropdown menu.
From the Admin dashboard, click Products in the sidebar menu.
Click the Edit icon next to the course you want to add a quiz to.
Click on "+ New Lesson" and select the Quiz option.
You'll be taken to the Quiz Editor, which is where you'll edit and create your quiz. Start by giving your Quiz a Name and writing a brief description.
Click on "+ New question" to add new questions to your quiz.
Give your question a title, then enter all of the answer options.

Next to each answer, choose whether it’s correct or incorrect by clicking the Right or Wrong icon. (You’ll need at least one correct answer to save the question.)

If you want to add more answer choices, just click + New answer to create another option.
Once you're done editing your question, click on Done to have it added to your quiz.

If the Done button is disabled, check if you have entered all of the necessary information, such as Title, at least one right answer, etc.
Repeat the process to add as many questions as you'd like.
Use the right-hand menu to set the Passing score (from 0%-100%) for your quiz. This determines the percentage of questions a customer must answer correctly to pass.
- 0%: There is no minimum score required to pass the quiz.
- 100%: Customers must answer every question correctly to pass the quiz.
You can also use the right-hand menu to manage other quiz settings, such as defining a custom icon and changing the visibility from Hidden to Visible.
Once you're done, click on Save at the top-right corner to add your quiz to your course.

FAQs

Can I preview and take quizzes while logged in as an Admin?

No. You can’t take or preview quizzes while you’re logged in as an admin, even when viewing your content through the Home Feed.

Quizzes can only be taken from a member account. This allows Podia to properly track quiz attempts, progress, and results separately from your admin account.

If you’d like to test the full quiz experience, we recommend creating a separate test member account using a different email address than your admin account, then logging in with that account in a different browser or private/incognito window before taking the quiz.

Can I create questions with multiple correct answers?

Yes. When a question is created with multiple correct answers, your customers will need to select all the right answers in order to be marked correct.

In the case of wanting to have all your listed answers as correct, we recommend making one answer at the bottom of your answer list read “all of the above” and have that marked as the only correct option.

Can I create questions with no right answers?

No. Quiz answers need to have at least one right answer.

In the case of wanting to have all your listed answers as wrong, we recommend making one answer at the bottom of your answer list read “none of the above” and have that marked as the only correct option.

Can I create questions with only right answers?

No. Quiz answers need to have at least one wrong answer.

Can I add images/videos/interactive content to quizzes on Podia?

No. For more advanced and interactive features, we recommend Genially or something like Typeform for long-form answers.

You'll then be able to embed these not just in online courses but also anywhere on your site.

How do passing scores in quizzes interact with section unlocking?

Passing scores work with the option to require customers to complete lessons and quizzes before unlocking new content. Together, these settings let you require customers to pass a quiz with a specific score before continuing to the next section of your course.

When a quiz has a passing score, it is only marked as complete after the customer reaches that score. Any later section set to unlock based on that quiz will remain locked until the customer passes.

If the customer doesn’t reach the minimum score, the quiz won’t be marked as complete, and they’ll need to retake it.
