Enabling Buy now, pay later (BNPL) for your members

Learn how to offer Buy now, pay later for your customers

Written by Rodrigo

Buy now, pay later (BNPL) gives your customers more flexibility by letting them split an eligible purchase into smaller payments. You receive the purchase amount upfront, minus applicable fees, while the BNPL provider collects repayments from your customers.

In this article, you'll learn how to enable Buy now, pay later (BNPL) for your members.

Overview

Buy now, pay later (BNPL) lets customers spread the cost of a purchase over time through a third-party payment provider. Podia supports Affirm, Klarna, and Afterpay through Stripe.

The payment provider manages the customer’s repayment schedule, so you don’t need to collect individual installments. BNPL is different from a payment plan you offer directly through Podia because the customer enters into a separate repayment agreement with the provider.

If customers meet the eligibility requirements, such as being in a supported location and using a supported currency, they’ll see the available BNPL options across their account, such as:

  • Banner page section on your product sales pages

  • Product shop pages

  • Checkout

Customers can click See plans to view the buy now, pay later options available to them. The options shown may vary depending on factors such as the payment provider, the product’s price, and the customer’s eligibility.

During the payment step at checkout, customers can select their preferred BNPL option.

They’ll then be redirected to the payment provider’s website to complete the payment and returned to Podia once the process is complete.

Enabling BNPL for your customers

BNPL platforms are supported by Stripe. To offer these payment options during checkout, you must connect a Stripe account to Podia.

Here's how to enable BNPL for your customers:

  1. From your home feed, click on your site name and select Admin from the dropdown menu.

  2. From the Admin dashboard, click Settings > Payments in the sidebar menu.

  3. Click Edit next to the Buy now, pay later option

  4. Check or uncheck Offer buy now, pay later at checkout, depending on whether you want these payment options to be available to customers.

  5. Hit Save to save your changes.

Currency and location requirements

A provider’s supported currency does not guarantee that BNPL options will appear at checkout for your customers.

Your business’s country, your customer’s country, and the purchase currency must also meet the provider’s requirements.

For Affirm and Afterpay, they require your business and customer to be located in the same country.

Klarna’s regional requirements differ:

  • Businesses in the UK, Switzerland, or a supported EEA country: Eligible cross-border purchases may be supported within these regions, provided the purchase currency matches the customer’s local currency, and Klarna operates in the customer’s country.

  • Businesses outside these regions: Your business and customer must be in the same country, and the purchase must use that country’s currency.

For example, an eligible Swedish business may accept a Klarna payment in EUR from a customer in Germany. An Australian business must charge in AUD and sell to a customer in Australia.

Important: Providers determine approval, repayment schedules, interest, and purchase limits. Podia doesn't manage payments made through BNPL platforms.

Availability and terms may change. Customers should always review the terms displayed at checkout before confirming payment.

FAQs

Why doesn’t a customer see BNPL at checkout?

The purchase may not meet the eligibility requirements. Location, currency, order amount, pricing type, and provider restrictions can all affect which payment methods appear.

What happens if a customer misses a repayment?

The BNPL provider manages the repayment agreement and follows up with the customer. You don’t need to collect the missed installment yourself.

Refunds and disputes are separate and remain subject to the applicable payment policies.

Can every customer use BNPL?

No. Each provider assesses eligibility and decides whether to approve a purchase. Available repayment terms may differ between customers.

Can customers use BNPL for subscriptions or payment plans?

No. BNPL is only available for one-time purchases.

Who helps customers with their installments?

Customers should contact their BNPL provider for help with approval decisions, repayment dates, interest, late fees, or changes to their repayment agreement.

Podia cannot help with installments made through any of the supported BNPL platforms.

Can I offer BNPL options on Podia through PayPal?

No. Buy now, pay later (BNPL) options on Podia are powered by Stripe, so you must have a Stripe account connected to offer them to your customers.

BNPL options aren’t available through PayPal.

Is offering BNPL mandatory on Podia?

No. You don’t need to offer buy now, pay later (BNPL) options if they aren’t right for your business. Offering BNPL is optional.

Go to Settings > Payments > Buy now, pay later, then check or uncheck the available option to enable or disable BNPL.

Is BNPL supported in multi-item carts?

Buy now, pay later (BNPL) is available for multi-item carts as long as every offer in the cart uses a one-time payment.

If the cart includes a subscription or payment plan, BNPL options won’t appear during checkout.
