Learn how to manage product categories

To make it easier for your customers to navigate your site, you can create categories to sort your products on across your site pages.

Categories are a great way to tag specific products and organize them by topics, for example.

You can tag specific products you want to display under the same category by adding the same tag.

Once you create a new category, we will automatically create a page for it as well, which is where these products will be displayed!

Creating, editing, and deleting categories

To create, edit, and delete categories on your Podia site:

  1. From your dashboard, click on Products in the sidebar menu,

  2. Click on the Edit icon next to the product you'd like to manage categories for.

  3. On the following page, navigate to the Details tab. Next, scroll down to navigate to the Categories area.

Adding a new category

To add a new category:

  1. From a product's Details tab, click the + New category button

  2. Give your category a name

  3. Click Create to create your category

Editing a category

Once a category has been created, just click the Pencil icon to have it edited. You’ll be able to change its name!

Deleting a category

You can also delete a category by clicking directly on the trash icon.

Deleting a category has a few effects. The category page will be removed, along with any category sections added to other pages. If you’ve added this category to your Header, you’ll need to remove that link manually.

Categories can’t be recovered, so if you only want to rename it, be sure to use the pencil icon instead.

Displaying categories on your site pages

Once you’ve added one or more categories to a product, you can add the Categories page section to your homepage or to any of your site pages.

Once you add a Categories page section to one of your site pages, it will display all of your categories like this. You can also customize how it looks.

For more details, check out this article: Categories page section

Editing category pages

Whenever you create a new category, a new “category page” will be created automatically.

This page will display all of the products marked with that particular category.

Here’s how to edit your category pages:

  1. From your Podia dashboard, click on Website in the sidebar menu.

  2. Click on the name of the category page you'd like to edit

  3. Use the site editor to make modifications to your site page

FAQs

How do I add categories to my site's header?

In order to add categories to your header, you can copy your categories page URL and add it to your site's header as a New link:

Can I delete my category pages?

No, these pages are automatically generated and can’t be deleted at this time. A category page will only be removed if the category itself is deleted.

Why do I see an error when saving a category name?

If you see an error message when trying to save a category, it usually means the category name conflicts with an existing page on your site.

When you create a category, Podia automatically generates a page for that category using the same name. Because of this, the category creates a URL on your site.

If there is already a site page using that same name (and therefore the same URL), the system will prevent the category from being saved to avoid duplicate page URLs.

Example:
If you already have a site page at /baking, you won’t be able to create a category named Baking, because the category would try to generate the same /baking page.

How to fix this

To resolve the error, you can either:

  • Rename the category to something slightly different, or

  • Edit the URL of the existing page that is using the same URL.

Once the category name no longer conflicts with an existing page URL, you’ll be able to save it successfully.
