Adding a checkout agreement

Learn how to add a checkbox customers must check before they buy

Written by Rodrigo

A checkout agreement adds a checkbox customers must check before they buy. You write the wording yourself, so you can use it for things like refund policies, cancellation policies, waivers, or service terms.

In this article, you’ll learn how to add a checkout agreement to your checkout.

Overview

When you turn on a checkout agreement, customers see a checkbox with your agreement text above the Pay now button at checkout. It will show across all of your paid and free products, plans, and events.

Customers won't be able to complete the checkout until they check the box.

The same checkbox appears on your upsell offers, next to the Skip and Pay now buttons. Customers need to check it before they can buy the upsell.

Customers will receive a confirmation email that shows which consent they signed up for and when they gave it. This gives them a record they can review later.

FAQs

Can customers buy without checking the box?

No. The Pay now button stays unavailable until customers check the agreement checkbox.

Will customers see the agreement on my upsells?

Yes. The checkbox also appears on your upsell offers, and customers need to check it before they can click Pay now. They can still click Skip to pass on the upsell.

Is there a character limit?

Yes. Agreement text can be up to 500 characters long. The counter in the Agreement text field shows how many characters you have left.

Why can’t I click Save?

If Require customers to agree before they buy is on, you need to enter agreement text before you can save. If the field is empty, you’ll see Enter your agreement text to continue.

Add your agreement text in the Agreement text field, then click Save.

Does the checkout agreement replace my Terms of Service and Privacy Policy?

No. Customers will still see the default notice about your Terms of Service and Privacy Policy below the Pay now button.

Can I turn off the checkout agreement?

Yes. Go to the Checkout agreement section, toggle off Require customers to agree before they buy, and click Save. Customers won’t see the checkbox at checkout anymore.
