If you need to change the Stripe account connected to Podia but aren’t sure how it will affect your setup, this guide will walk you through it.
Disconnecting or switching your Stripe account will directly impact active subscriptions, as well as any payment plans.
Here’s what you can expect if you disconnect or change your Stripe account.
Implications of disconnecting and/or changing your Stripe account
Changing your Stripe account will have direct implications on all of your recurring and pending payments, such as subscriptions and payment plans.
All of your recurring subscriptions and payment plans are tied to the specific Stripe account that was connected to your Podia account at the time they were created.
Once that Stripe account is disconnected, Podia can no longer communicate with it to charge or manage any subscriptions or payment plans that were previously set up.
If you don’t have any active subscriptions or pending payments, you can safely disconnect the old Stripe account and connect a new one.
If you have active subscriptions/payment plans, here would be the implications:
Implications on active subscriptions and payment plans
Here are the implications of disconnecting/changing your Stripe account on active subscriptions and payment plans:
Once your Stripe account is changed or disconnected, Podia will no longer be able to communicate with Stripe to manage subscriptions.
Any subscriptions created by Podia in your Stripe account will remain active and continue to be charged through the old Stripe account.
They will not be automatically canceled, so if you want them canceled, you must do so through Podia before disconnecting or changing your Stripe account.
You can also reconnect your original Stripe account to cancel any subscriptions/payment plans associated with it.
Even though these subscriptions will still be active, Stripe will stop sending webhooks to Podia, meaning we won’t be able to create invoices, update invoice statuses, update subscription states, or process related changes.
New customers will still be able to sign up for your existing products with payment plans or subscriptions.
Any new purchases made after connecting your new Stripe account will have their funds sent to the newly connected Stripe account.
Existing customers who signed up before the change will continue to have their payments sent to your previous Stripe account.
Subscriptions and payment plans can’t be migrated between Stripe accounts.
Customers with active subscriptions created prior to the Stripe account disconnection/change won't be able to cancel their plans and/or change to a different community plan
If a customer's subscription is active when the Stripe account is disconnected, it will be active indefinitely, and they will retain access to your community/included products/etc.
What should I do...?
Existing subscriptions will stay linked to your old Stripe account and will no longer be managed by Podia.
If you want these subscriptions to be managed through Podia again, customers will need to cancel their existing subscriptions before you disconnect the old Stripe account and then sign up again after you connect the new one.
Subscription plan cancellations related to subscription plans attached to your old Stripe account would need to be done directly through your old Stripe account.
These cancellations will not communicate with Podia.
Managing Historical Data Before Switching
Switching a Stripe account in Podia does not affect your historical sales data or customer information records. Podia retains these records, but it’s a good practice to back up this data for your records before making any changes.
